Working with the LGBTQ Community: Tools for Those in Helping Professions to Create a Supportive and Affirming Environment

Attendees of this presentation will leave with not only a greater understanding of the LGBTQ community, but a clear vision of what it means to create an affirming environment in a library setting.

This workshop details the importance of libraries in social movements, the impact of literature on the LGBTQ community, foundational information about the LGBTQ community, various identities within the community, a breakdown of gender, and details about the transition process.

The most culturally relevant statistics and research is presented to best paint a picture of the current state of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in the country today. The presenter then provides action steps and specific examples on how to not only be a passive ally, but an active advocate for the community in one’s workspace. This presentation gives plenty of space for open discussion, honest questions, and self disclosure.
