Part-Time Children’s Librarian/Librarian Trainee - Port Jefferson Free Library

Duties

The Port Jefferson Free Library is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, creative, child/parent friendly and customer- service oriented individual. The successful candidate should possess a strong interest and knowledge of children’s literature and culture as well as the ability to independently run programs for child of all ages served in our department. Additional duties include collection development, program registration and reference services.

Qualifications

MLS Degree from an ALA Accredited Institution and a valid NYS Public Librarian Certificate OR current enrollment in an ALA Accredited Library Science Program.

Possession of the following skills is beneficial

  • Desire to work with children from Birth to Age 12 (Grade 6) and their parents/caregivers.
  • Ability to work as a team member and collaborate with coworkers on projects and programs. You must be result oriented, have excellent interpersonal skills, embrace change and should seek “to make it happen.”
  • Demonstrate a positive, energetic and excited attitude towards public service. Willingness and ability to represent the Library at various events through the community, engaging in Library promotion and participate in activities that engage children and parents/caregivers.
  • Developing, promoting and executing innovative programs for both children and parents/caregivers.
  • Have strong time management skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks with minimal supervision, to ensure responsibilities are completed.
  • Willingness to participate in school outreach and community events that take place outside of the normal work schedule.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a busy Children’s Department.
  • Prior experience working with Sierra, Google applications, Microsoft programs, Event Keeper a plus.
  • Flexibility to work several mornings/afternoons, at least 1 evening a week, and 2 Saturdays a month, and Sunday rotation. Approximately 19-22 hours per week.

Salary/Benefits

  • Librarian starting at $36.92/ Librarian Trainee starting at $25.54
  • The Port Jefferson Free Library is an association library and has a professional staff association represented by NYSUT. Benefits include NYS Retirement Plan, paid accrued time off and more benefits outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
