  Long Island author, Kim Taylor, will share her book A Flag for Juneteenth. This powerful title shares a unique story of the celebration of the first Juneteenth, from the perspective of a young slave girl who lives on a plantation in Texas. Young Huldah, who is preparing to celebrate her tenth birthday, can’t possibly anticipate how much her life will change that Juneteenth morning. The story follows Huldah and her community as they process the news of their freedom and celebrate together by creating a community freedom flag.

• Ask An Archivist: Archival Description For Beginners

  This is a continuation of the series from LILRC's Nicole Menchise that discusses the principles of collecting and maintaining archives.

  Archival Description is more than using adjectives and one's own perceptions about an object to determine its context like the subject of a photograph. This program will provied an overview of the different elements as laid out by the Society of American Archivist's (SAA) Describing Archives a Content Standard, better known as DACS. DACS may have been designed for consistancy in creating Finding Aids, but these standards can be applied to describe collection materials you are cataloging from the general to the specific whether you are using a material management software or a spreadsheet.

  From the SAA website: "Archival description enables archivists to distill masses of information about records...what they are, what they mean and the historical process by which they were created and maintained...Good archival description cannot just depict the physical and intellectual characteristics of documents. It must communicate how the accumulation of documents in a collection represents and provides evidence of the major functions of an organization or individual. This contextual description is key to meaning-making and gives users the tools necessary to effectively evaluate the value of records as evidence and information."

• 8mm Film Digitization and Preservation with Robert Anen

  In addition to photographs, families captured their memories on 8 millimeter (mm) film beginning from the late-1930s into the 1980s (until videotape dominated the American consumer market). By the 1960s, it was superseded by Super 8mm film which allowed for a wider image to be captured. These films were generally captured at home around the holidays, at various celebrations, on vacation, or during any sort of leisure activity. There’s a good chance that your family or the library/historical organization you work at, also has films like this of your hometown. Now is the chance to pull them off the shelf and get them digitized.

  LILRC's Project Archivist Robert Anen will offer a program on how LILRC members can now submit digitization requests for both 8mm films and Super 8mm films. He will show you how we digitize films at LILRC, how to identify 8mm film formats when you encounter them in your collections, how to determine if you are looking at a film or a tape, how to properly store your films, what goes into inspecting a film before digitization, and show you the digitization process of a film in real time.

  Keynote Presentation:

  Patrick will be talking about advocacy techniques and approaches to book ban efforts.
  

  Patrick Sweeney is a tireless and innovative advocate for libraries. A 2007 graduate of the San Jose School of Library and Information Sciences, Patrick is the former Administrative Librarian of the Sunnyvale (CA) Public Library and was Executive Director of EveryLibrary California, a statewide initiative to support library propositions. He was awarded Library Journal’s “Movers and Shakers” award in 2015 for his library advocacy work. He is co-author of “Winning Elections and Influencing Politicians for Library Funding” as well as “Before the Ballot; Building Support for Library Funding.” He was recently recognized with a “40 Under 40” award by the American Association of Political Consultants for his work fighting for libraries at EveryLibrary. He is a lecturer at the San Jose Information School where he teaches courses on politics and libraries. He is active across social media as PC Sweeney.

• Montauk to Manhattan with Novelist Thomas Maier

  Join award-winning author Thomas Maier when he discusses his upcoming novel, Montauk to Manhattan (Post Hill Press, July 9, 2024), which is both set on Long Island and drawn from our local history. Montauk to Manhattan is a rollicking murder mystery in which the protagonist's own historical novel about the 1880s theft of Montauk Native-American lands by a LIRR tycoon is being filmed as a miniseries. 

  Maier will also discuss how his own books have been adapted into TV shows in this new era of streaming television, including his experience with MAFIA SPIES, a brand-new series coming out July 16 on Paramount+, and how his previous book about Masters & Johnson became an Emmy-winning Showtime drama series starring Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan, Jeremy Strong and Allison Janney. Those real life TV experiences inform the plot of Montauk to Manhattan, which was inspired by Maier's 1998 Newsday investigation of the mistreatment of  the Montauk tribe. That same Newsday investigation has been cited by the East End tribes in their legal attempts at official recognition. The novel also deals with today's issues of the media, presidential politics, and #MeToo Hollywood.

  Thomas Maier is the author of eight books, a television producer, and longtime award-winning journalist for Newsday in New York. • LGBTQ Cultural Awareness

  This interactive workshop is designed for audiences who would like to learn to better support their LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning) co-workers, friends and family. We will discuss a plethora of topics ranging from the difference between sexual identity and gender identity, to particular forms of minority stressors that disproportionately impact the LGBTQ community. We will explore ways to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

  After this workshop we hope that you will have a better understanding of: 

  • LGBTQ Recent Terminology
  • Exploring Minority Stress’ Effects on sexual and gender minority peoples
  • Methods for Creating Inclusive Environments for LGBTQ peoples

  PRESENTER:

  Dr. Samuel M. Colbert, PhD is a counseling psychologist, licensed in the state of Pennsylvania. He earned his PhD at Ball State University and completed his pre-doctoral clinical internship at University of Pennsylvania’s (UPenn’s) counseling center. He received his Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Ball State University and his Bachelor of Arts at SUNY Geneseo, Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

  Dr. Colbert is a clinician, consultant, educator, and researcher. He practices couples and individual therapy at Philadelphia Couples Therapy, a private group practice in Philadelphia, PA. He has also taught multiple undergraduate courses, including: The Psychology of Sexuality, Multicultural Counseling and Fundamentals of Counseling Skills. He has presented hundreds of LGBTQ+ Skill Building Workshops, with varied audiences including, psychologists at the Annual American Psychological Convention, National Rehabilitation Psychological Conference, and fellows at John’s Hopkins. Informed from his teaching, training, and clinical experiences,

  Dr. Colbert has co-authored a chapter in Navigating Difficult Teaching Moments in Teaching Diversity and Social Justice published by the American Psychological Association. His research includes exploring factors leading to the health and well-being of gender and sexual minority people possessing intersecting identities.

• Developing a Compelling Teaching Philosophy Statement

  In this 90 minute webinar presentation, the presenter will outline the components of a succinct teaching philosophy statement. Participants will reflect on their teaching methods, style, and personality. The teaching philosophy statement articulates your teaching beliefs, values, and assessment activities, and serves as a roadmap that will help navigate your teaching practices. 

  Learning outcomes: 

  At the end of this 90 minute presentation, participants will be able to: 

  1. identify their personal theory of learning;  

  2. articulate their teaching beliefs, practices, and values; 

  3. provide examples of assessment techniques that evaluate student learning; 

  4. develop self-reflective activities to analyze their own teaching; and 

  5. integrate their own unique personality with memorable, engaging teaching practices 

  Presenter: Mark Aaron Polger (they/them)

  Mark Aaron Polger is an academic librarian and information literacy instructor who has been working in libraries since 1992. They received their MLIS degree in 2000 from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada) and has worked as a librarian in public, hospital, and academic libraries. Currently, Mark is the Coordinator of Library Outreach at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York (CUNY). They have written about library marketing in journals and other publications and has presented nationally at library conferences.

  Mark is the author of 3 books; Engaging Diverse Learners: Teaching Strategies for Academic Librarians, co-authored with Scott Sheidlower (2017, Libraries Unlimited), Library Marketing Basics (2019, Rowman and Littlefield), and Library Signage and Wayfinding Design: Communicating Effectively with Your Users (2021, ALA Editions)

  Their research interests include library marketing, outreach, and UX (user experience) design. Currently, Mark is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the open-access, peer reviewed journal Marketing Libraries Journal, which was launched in Fall 2017. Their next book project will be on Library Marketing Post-COVID.
