Participants will explore the intersection of personal leadership style and organizational culture, develop strategies for communicating clear expectations, and learn how to effectively support and hold staff accountable.

Session 1

Know Thyself: Leadership Style and Organizational Fit

The best leaders know who they are—and how that impacts their team. In this session, participants will reflect on their personal leadership style and values and how those align (or don’t) with their organization. Through guided activities attendees will identify their core leadership strengths and explore ways to lead more intentionally and authentically.

Kate Hall and Kathy Parker have been collaborating on various committees, library boards and programming for over a decade. They are co-authors of The Public Library Director’s Toolkit and The Public Library Director’s HR Toolkit from ALA Editions. 

Kate Hall is a transformative library executive and nationally recognized speaker who has trained thousands of library professionals across the country.

As Executive Director of Northbrook Public Library, she has successfully navigated challenging building projects, championed advocacy efforts, and managed complex patron situations. During COVID, she launched Illinois Libraries Present, a statewide joint programming initiative that brings nationally recognized speakers like Raina Telgemeier and Colson Whitehead to over 5 million Illinois residents.

Kate specializes in crisis management, EDI, and organizational leadership. Her focus on inclusion, lifelong learning, and relationship building has earned multiple accolades, including the2021 Illinois Library Association Librarian of the Year Award and a decade of Library Journal 5-Star recognition for Northbrook Public Library.


With over 25 years of experience and leadership roles in national and statewide committees, Kate transforms libraries into inclusive, forward-thinking institutions that serve both staff and communities.

Kathy Parker is a trusted library leader and nationally recognized trainer with over 40years of experience in public and private libraries. She has worked in nearly every department and served in key leadership roles, giving her a deep understanding of library operations and governance.

As Director of the Glenwood-Lynwood Public Library District from 2002 to 2018, Kathy led a major building project and revitalized services to meet evolving community needs. A co-founder of Director’s University, she has helped build Illinois’s library leadership pipeline and served on statewide committees including the Illinois Library Association and RAILS.

After retiring in 2018, Kathy launched kathyparker consulting, where she trains trustees and new directors, provides interim leadership, and specializes in stabilizing and transforming libraries facing complex challenges. Her areas of expertise include governance, policy development, strategic planning, and director-trustee relationships.

Kathy’s practical approach and dedication to mission-driven service earned her the American Library Association’s Trustee Citation Award. She remains passionate about helping libraries thrive and better serve their communities.
