Member institutions can apply to earn a site visit from our Project Archivist to process, digitize, and describe materials according to archival standards.

Ask the Archivist

Archivists at several of the Councils of the Empire State Library Network (ESLN) provide advice to members on all aspects of archival work, such as processing, preservation, reference, acquisition, appraisal, and digital projects.

Consultation

LILRC provides consultation services that include the following:

  • Guidance for processing, housing and displaying historic materials including paper-based archives, textiles, photographs, and furnishings.
  • Training and advice in the preservation (including digitization) of archival materials.
  • Site visits to make recommendations and provide information to special libraries and cultural institutions which maintain Long Island's historic materials.
  • One-on-one training in CONTENTdm software and the Project Client interface for participants in the LILRC Regional Digitization Program.
  • Provide technical support to organizations participating with the New York Heritage Digital Collections and New York State Historic Newspaper websites.

Digitization Grants (requires login)

This grant is available to member libraries to digitize materials in their collection.  Priority is given to cooperative projects that document Long Island history.

Digitization Service (requires login)

LILRC digitizes materials for our members to help improve access and outreach.

Documentary Heritage and Preservation of New York (DHPSNY)

Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York (DHPSNY) is a statewide program that provides free planning and education services to support the vast network of collecting institutions such as archives, libraries, historical societies, museums, and other organizations that safeguard and ensure access to New York's historical records and library research materials.

Empire Archival Discovery

The Empire Archival Discovery Cooperative (Empire ADC) is a system for information about archival collections held in cultural heritage organizations across New York State. At Empire ADC patrons can search and browse collection descriptions (called “finding aids”) to discover what historical materials are available for research and where to find them.

New York Heritage

Digital asset management system where member libraries can make accessible their historic digitized materials that includes photos, documents and other materials.

NYS Historic Newspapers

The NYS Historic Newspapers project provides free online access to a wide range of newspapers chosen to reflect New York's unique history.

Traveling Exhibits

LILRC  member institutions can borrow one of our traveling exhibits for up to a month.
