In this one-hour program, award-winning author and Assistant Attorney General Adena J. Bernstein examines the ongoing global effort to recover art stolen by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Drawing from her new book, Stolen Legacies: The Fight for Nazi-Looted Art, Bernstein explains how the Third Reich organized the largest cultural theft in history — not only to enrich itself but to erase Jewish identity, culture, and memory.

Blending international legal research from thirteen countries with her personal view as the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Bernstein tracks the complex process of restitution cases, the involvement of museums and governments, and the families still fighting for justice generations later.

This program encourages audiences to reflect on why these cultural losses still matter, what restitution means today, and how art serves as a vessel for memory, identity, and truth.

Adena J. Bernstein is a career prosecutor and Assistant Attorney General whose work spans international extraditions, ethics education, and public policy. She is the award-winning author of Living Among the Dead, a powerful retelling of her grandmother’s Holocaust survival story that she now speaks about internationally. The granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Adena also serves as a national facilitator for the What You Do Matters (WYDM) program, teaching Holocaust lessons to law enforcement nationwide.
