Join LILRC for a panel discussion about Long Island during the Revolutionary War, including life under British occupation (1776 -1783) and the Culper Spy Ring organized by George Washington. Chris Kretz is Head of Academic Engagement at Stony Brook University Libraries and the producer and host of the noted podcast, The Long Island History Project. Claire Bellerjeau is the author of Remember Liss and of Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution. as well as the founder of Remember Liss, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with the mission to educate the community about the extraordinary life and times of an enslaved Black woman from New York named Elizabeth, or Liss. Dr. Joanne Grasso is an Adjunct Associate Professor of History and Political Science specializing as an “Americanist” in the areas of the American Revolution, the American presidency, the founding documents, the American West, and Long Island history. She holds an interdisciplinary Doctor of Arts degree in Modern World History, two Master of Arts degrees in History and Government and Politics and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics, Economics and Society. Dr. Grasso is a member of The American Revolution Round Table (ARRT) in New York City and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Natalie Naylor is retired from teaching American social history at Hofstra (including Long Island history and women’s history) and was also director of its Long Island Studies Institute. She is a past president of the Nassau County Historical Society and currently is its program chairperson and edits its annual Journal. She is the author of Women in Long Island’s Past and numerous articles on Long Island history. This program is presented pursuant to a grant from PBS WETA in support of Library Programming related to the AMERICAN REVOLUTION documentary.
