Both breakfasts were a success this year and well attended by legislative advocates and legislators.

The Suffolk County legislative breakfast was held September 21 at the Brentwood Public Library.  Tom Tarantowicz from the Brentwood Library delivered opening remarks with additional comments from Kevin Verbesey (SCLS) who detailed NYLA’s legislative agenda and Tim Spindler (LILRC).  Seven legislators or their aids attended.  Each legislator was also given a chance to speak.  Approximately 115 library supporters also attended.

The Nassau County legislative breakfast was held September 28 at the Nassau Library System.  Caroline Ashby (Assistant Director) delivered opening remarks.  Ken Casser, a local businessman, spoke about the value of libraries to his business and how they helped him transition to a new career.  Tim Spindler (Executive Director) spoke about LILRC’s role with libraries.  We had 11 legislators attend.  Each legislator was also given a chance to speak.  Approximately 120 library supporters also attended.

We have had a busy summer at LILRC and there have been many changes happening within the organization.  Three of the biggest changes members will notice is the implementation of our new member management, event management system and our move to Google for Nonprofits which allows us to improve communication.

The membership management system and the event registration system comes in one package and allows us to take payments and donations online, track registrations, and manage communications with members.  We are also now able to create a members only section of our web sites to allow access to members only content.  As part of this, we launched the members only service: Ask the Lawyer.  As we add content to this area, we will send out further announcements to members to make you aware of what is available.  We are taking registrations through the same software including payments.  Reminders and confirmations for the registrations are automated.

Google for Nonprofits has allowed us to take advantage of cloud based email, productivity software as well as the creation of distribution lists (listservs) for committees and interest groups.  We have set up three interest groups for academic libraries, hospital libraries, and archives & special collections.  All are welcome to participate in these three groups regardless if you work in those types of libraries.  If you have to participate in any of these groups or have us create an additional group send me an email at tspindler@lilrc.org.

There will be more changes and improvements of services coming in the year so keep an eye out for these.

I have received an excellent reception arriving at LILRC with many warm greetings from librarians across Long Island. There are a lot of new experiences coming into a new job and I have been diving into things learning a lot from the excellent staff at LILRC and also members of the board and others.  As mentioned at the annual meeting, I see LILRC building on its strengths to develop a nimble and agile organization adapting to the needs of the libraries in Suffolk and Nassau County.  I have begun a review of internal policies and procedures as well as the financials of the organization. Part of my goal is to examine closely what we have been doing and how we have been spending money to find ways to increase service levels to members providing greater value.  I have also met recently with Nate Hill the executive director of the NY Metropolitan New York Library Council and we have had some initial discussions on how we can find ways to cooperate more. In the next year, you are likely to see changes in the organization including the initiation of a strategic planning process that will involve all libraries of Long Island and the staff at LILRC.  I look forward to learning about what you are doing and what your needs are. Feel free to drop me a call (631-675-1570 x201) or send me an email (tspindler@lilrc.org) if you would like to show off your library or discuss any needs you have.
