When learning something new, have you ever had difficulty concentrating or felt overwhelmed, frustrated, and/or tired? Sometimes that happens when we are learning something new that is complicated or in-depth because our brain is at its capacity. This webinar will help you gain a basic understanding of cognitive load theory and how it can be applied to one-shot library instruction sessions to enhance learning through a combination of direct instruction, examples, and a collaborative activity. By understanding how our brains process and store information, we can design instruction that is easier for learners to digest and assimilate into long-term memory, thus potentially reducing the risk of overwhelming students and enhancing overall learning outcomes. This is especially valuable in one-shot library sessions in health professions, where time is limited. Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, you will be able to: -identify and differentiate between intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load, and explain their relevance to library instruction. -describe instructional strategies that reduce extraneous cognitive load and optimize intrinsic and germane cognitive load in one-shot library sessions (e.g., using clear instructions, effective visuals, chunking information, and incorporating active learning activities). Presenter Katie Hoskins has worked in a variety of academic library settings including health sciences, community college, and a university archive. She has over 14 years of teaching experience in libraries and in addition to an MLS, Katie earned a Masters in Learning Design and Technology, which is where she first learned about cognitive load theory. Some of her interests include watercolor, old books, game-based learning, and reading about developments in the field of learning sciences. Katie is interested to see what becomes known about the impact of AI on learning, especially as it pertains to cognitive load and long-term memory. NOTE: This program is available for viewing only.
