This quote from Dr. Martin Luther King resonates through the work and heart of many librarians, the holders of knowledge. Knowledge is power, the very foundation of fairness, equity, inclusion and social justice. Collectively, there is so much work to be done for creating safe and nurturing environments that affirm and value all its members. It all starts with knowledge, self-reflection, and courage...help everyone feel the sunlight!
Dr. Judi Brown Clarke is the Vice President for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer for Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Health System. She possesses over sixteen years on senior management teams shaping strategic plans for diversity and establishing infrastructures for inclusive excellence and equity sustainability. This includes accountability metrics that facilitate progress and the utilization of data-driven, evidence-based practices for decision making. She is adept at fostering open dialogues on difficult conversations with multiple constituencies by building trust, empowerment and skills.

Presentation: Intellectual Freedom Stories: From a Shifting Landscape
Intellectual freedom is a complex concept that democracies and free societies around the world define in different ways but always strive to uphold. But what does it mean in practice? How do academic librarians handle the ethical conundrums that often accompany the commitment to defending it? Valerie Nye edited the book Intellectual Freedom Stories: From a Shifting Landscape (ALA 2020) and collected stories from librarians around the world, asking them to tell their stories. Nye will share several of the real-world stories she collected from academic librarians to illuminate the difficulties, triumphs, and occasional setbacks of advocating for free and equal access to information for all people.
Valerie Nye is the Library Director at Santa Fe Community College, a position she has held for two years. She has worked in academic libraries for over 20 years and has been speaking about intellectual freedom issues at workshops and conferences for over 15 years. She is the editor of the newly published book, Intellectual Freedom Stories: From a Shifting Landscape (ALA, 2020). She is currently serving as secretary on the Amigos Library Services board as Secretary. Valerie holds a BA in English from Cornell College and MLIS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The first Academic Libraries Invitational was initiated in 2015. As suggested by the LILRC Board and approved by the Boards of ASLD and DASL, this regional academic libraries conference was officially changed to Herbert Biblo Academic Libraries Invitational in 2019 in memory of former LILRC Director Herbert Biblo.
