Changes to subscription philosophies, reductions in library budgets, and adjusting to the needs of an evolving user community mean that libraries and vendors are working ever-closer to arrive at a solution that meets the needs of both parties. Through years of working with libraries, Amy Thurlow saw what she perceived as differences in treatment based on gender from both the library side and from vendors. As Thurlow delved through survey results, and then through the literature, she hoped to learn this was just a misperception on her part. Instead, Thurlow and her co-researcher, Anne Cerstvik Nolan, learned about the factors at play causing these gender portrayals. In this program, they will discuss situations and experiences that happen on a daily basis, and how we can overcome those in an effort to change society and move toward equality.

Presenters: Amy Thurlow is the Regional Sales Manager for Academic Libraries in New England and has been at EBSCO for over 16 years, mostly in the role of a vendor. She has developed close relationships with many of her customers allowing her to have deep conversations about issues such as gender issues. She is a single mother of a strong 23 year old and they often coach each other on fair treatment by society. She is passionate about equality and teaching others to identify mistreatment and how to approach the situation toward a solution.

Anne Cerstvik Nolan has been at the Brown University Library for 28 years, first as Assistant Head of Reference and Head of Interlibrary Loan.  She was also the Electronic Resources Librarian for several years before attaining her current position as Collection Strategist for Licensing and Assessment.  Anne has worked with library vendors for over 20 years and this project was born from that work.  She is also the proud mom of two very cute Chihuahuas.
