This workshop is interactive for the participants to explore where they are on the continuum of learning about the systemic issues and prejudice affecting us today. Participants will learn the fundamental difference between interpersonal and institutional issues. We will discuss complicated terminologies such as unconscious bias, intersectionality, language around sexual orientation and gender identity, white privilege, and more. Lastly, we will go through a history timeline that breaks down how laws and policies have affected our mindsets. The history timeline is based on many facts about Long Island, drawing a connection to where we live.

Objectives:
On an individual level, this conversation will raise awareness and people will leave being reflective about the importance of understanding the history, role we play in society, and the importance of communication as it pertains to diversity and inclusion issues.

Interpersonal interactions with their peers and library patrons will see an impact with greater understanding and knowledge if the person chooses to engage in the teaching.
