Program Description: This program will introduce participants to several yoga principles/sutras which will then frame a gentle, guided practice suitable for all. Emphasizing the connection between the mind and breath, the practice will be followed by an overview of the incorporated "tools" so that participants are comfortable using them on their own as a means to manage stress..
Presenter: Lisa Melendez, Professor of Library Services, Suffolk County Community College, Ammerman Lisa Melendez has been an academic public services/instructional librarian for over 25 years. Several years ago, she began to think about and research how her studies and practice in yoga overlap with information literacy. This led her to attending the Summer Session on Contemplative Pedagogy at Smith College (2014), and from that point on she began to explore practical ways of incorporating mindfulness/contemplative practices into her work, both in the classroom as well as on committees.
She has presented at Transforming Higher Education, the annual conference sponsored by the Association for the Contemplative Mind in Higher Education (2016), and along with several other academic librarians,has formed the Mindfulness for Librarians Facebook group which hosts virtual hangouts on related issues, practices, etc. Most recently, she published a chapter in Recipes for Mindfulness in your Library (2019): https://www.alastore.ala.org/content/recipes-mindfulness-your-library-supporting-resilience-and-community-engagement
