The first Academic Libraries Invitational conference was initiated in 2015.  Suggested by the LILRC Board and approved by the Boards of ASLD and DASL, this year’s conference is officially changed to Herbert Biblo Academic Libraries Invitational in memory of former LILRC Director Herbert Biblo.  All faculties and staff from Long Island academic libraries are invited and encouraged to attend this year’s conference at a new venue, the Molloy College Suffolk Center, to hear from the following speakers presenting on three great topics.

Rethinking Spaces and Services: Building a Single Service Point at Adelphi University Libraries

Driven by a grant from the State of New York to build an Innovation Center in Swirbul Library, Adelphi University Libraries has an opportunity to redesign the library experience for our students.  The displacement of the existing access services desk is the impetus behind reducing the number of service points in Swirbul Library and creating a multi-purpose help desk. These space changes allow the Libraries to adjust our service model to reduce redundancy in service provision and focus on the library as a place of learning.  This presentation will discuss how the Libraries’ utilized a learner-centered perspective to improve upon the environment in which students study, socialize, learn, and grow.

Presenter: Jason Byrd, Associate Dean of Research and Academic Services, Adelphi University Libraries

VR Art Instruction: Transformative learning and enhanced creativity through the use of Virtual Realities

During the Fall 2018 semester, Suffolk County Community College Librarian Fabio Montella and Suffolk County Community College Art Professor Meredith Starr sought to implement virtual reality into art instruction while adhering to the concepts of information literacy.  This collaboration intended to facilitate student learning in two disciplines through the use of emerging technology and instructional scaffolding.  Efforts to ensure the successful attainment of learning objectives required a harmonious blend of disciplines, personalities, and instructional technology into one learning environment; all of which brought forth constructive concepts and assessments.  This program will elaborate and reflect upon the collaborative efforts and results of that work.

Presenter: Fabio Montella, Assistant Professor of Library Services, Suffolk County Community College/East Campus

Content Gamification: Educational Games that Yield Informative Results

This program will provide an overview of various student outreach events in which the content has been gamified to make in-person and virtual bibliographic instruction enjoyable for learners.   It will provide tips for first-time planners and cover ways that one might assess player responses to determine if desired learning outcomes were achieved.

Presenter:  Kristen Cinar, Reader Services Librarian, Suffolk County Community College/Ammerman Campus

By invitation only (morning coffee and lunch included).

Free to attend for faculty and staff of Long Island academic libraries.

A certificate for 3 Professional Development Hours (.3 CEU's) will be emailed after the workshop.

Thanks Molloy College for hosting this year's conference!
