Position Available: Substitute Children's Librarian I

The Bellmore Memorial Library is seeking a friendly, enthusiastic, and flexible substitute children's librarian to join our team! Candidates will be scheduled to work as needed, including evenings and weekends.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide customer service, reference assistance, and readers' advisory services at the Children's Reference Desk.

  • Plan, conduct, and oversee programming for children birth through grade 6.

  • Participate in the selection of new library materials for children.

  • Assist in the compilation of children’s book lists.

  • Perform other projects and assignments as needed.


  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution.

  • Must be a Nassau County resident. This is a non-competitive Civil Service position.

  • Enjoys working with children. Prior library experience in youth services is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excels at providing customer service. 

  • Excellent written, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of children's literature and programming.

  • Comfortable presenting programs to children and families.

  • Possesses strong technology skills and a knowledge of Sierra, Eventkeeper, and Microsoft Office. 

  • Desire to work cooperatively and collaboratively as part of a team.

Hourly Wage:

  • Range: $24.00 - $28.00, depending on experience.
