Part Time Reference Librarian or Librarian Trainee - Islip Public Library

The Islip Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, service-oriented part-time Librarian I or Librarian Trainee for its combined Adult Services and Teen Departments.  Trainees looking for a positive mentoring experience are encouraged to apply.  The position will entail 12-17 hours per week, depending upon availability, including one weekly evening shift and one monthly Saturday rotation.


  • Reference, research, and readers’ advisory services.
  • Participation in collection development.
  • Preparation of library displays and exhibits.
  • Assistance with development and execution of innovative adult and teen programming roster.


  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest and proficiency in technology.
  • Ability to work independently, follow through with projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Passion for customer service.


  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited school and Public Librarian certificate or actively enrolled in an accredited program for the Librarian Trainee position.


  • Minimum rate of $27.00 per hour for Librarian Trainees.  Final salary dependent upon credits completed.
  • Minimum Librarian I rate of $33.00 per hour.
