Part-Time Teen Librarian - Half Hollow Hills Community Library

The Half Hollow Hills Community Library is seeking an enthusiastic, friendly, and creative Librarian or Librarian Trainee to fill a part-time 17.5-hour position in our very busy Teen Department.

The successful candidate must be interested in working with enthusiastic teens, from 6th through 12th grade, to provide engaging after-school programming, reader’s advisory, and outreach.

This position requires three afternoon shifts per week, plus nights and weekends. Per our union contract, the starting salary for a Librarian I is $26.43/hr. Librarian Trainee salary depends on number of credits completed.

This year, our library will be opening its doors to a new 21st century library, complete with a makerspace and dedicated Teen Space.

Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited library school and a valid New York State Professional Certificate; Librarian Trainee applicants must be currently enrolled in an ALA accredited library school.  

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.  

  • Establish and manage relationships with eager teens and tweens in an exciting and energetic environment.  

  • Knowledge of Young Adult literature, media and culture required.  

  • Ability to troubleshoot common computer applications on diverse devices.  

  • Strong commitment to public services and the ability to work well with a diverse community.  

  • Comfortable with public speaking. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory services to teen patrons.  

  • Promote Teen Library services via social media and local outreach, including school visits.  

  • Coverage of the Makerspace during peak hours to supervise events.  

  • Collection development to ensure the teen collection is up to date and includes relevant print and digital resources.  

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate library events and services to fulfill the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs.

  • Instruct teens in information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills using the Library's website, databases, and reputable resources.

  • Other duties as assigned.
